Be More Active |
| |
You may have heard that exercise is good for your heart, muscles, and bones. You may have even heard that physical activity can help build self-esteem by helping you look and feel better. But none of that will make you feel better today.
Or will it? Studies show that even after just one session of physical activity, some people notice:
- Improvements in mood,
- Reduced anxiety, and
- Temporarily reduced muscle tension.
And these benefits may last anywhere from 2 to 4 hours. With regular physical activity, it’s possible to feel this calming effect on an ongoing basis. A reduction in your symptoms is another possible long-term effect.
To help you begin, remember:
- Start small. If you haven't been active in a while, there's no need to run a marathon. A walk in the park will do to start, and then you can build up.
- Find what you enjoy. If you didn't enjoy contact sports as a kid, you may not enjoy them now. But you may enjoy biking, dancing, swimming, or volleyball.
- Build a support network. Talking with friends, family members, and other people who are physically active can help. Ask how they got started, if they have any tips for success, and what you need to do to keep going.
Here are a few fun ideas to help get you started.
- Rent a canoe and spend an afternoon paddling on a lake.
- Get a group together and go skating.
- Take a walking tour of your town.
- Go for a picnic with the family - and don't drive all the way.
Bad weather keeping you indoors? Stay in and play!
- Meet friends at the museum, zoo, or aquarium.
- Go line dancing or ballroom dancing on weekends.
After trying two or three activities, let your imagination take over. The important thing is to get active and have fun!
Talk with your doctor or other healthcare provider before changing or participating in any physical activity program.
