Common Symptoms

People with social anxiety disorder have an overwhelming and persistent fear of social situations, such as going to a party, dancing, or eating in public. Other people have a strong fear in situations where they have to be in front of other people, such as talking in front of a group. They also may worry about these events for weeks in advance.

Strong feelings of worry or stress over simple tasks such as using a public restroom, eating out, talking on the phone, or writing in front of other people are also common symptoms of social anxiety disorder.

People with social anxiety disorder may have the following symptoms:

  • Fear of doing something that will be embarrassing or humiliating

  • Fear that other people are judging them

  • Strong anxiety that causes them to avoid doing things

  • Anxiety and stress when doing the activity

  • Panic attacks—a sudden and strong fear that occurs without warning and has physical symptoms such as blushing, pounding heart, sweating, stomachache and trembling
