Common Symptoms

A person with panic disorder has panic attacks that occur without warning in places where there is no reason to be afraid. A panic attack is a strong, sudden fear that is associated with physical symptoms such as:

  • Strong or fast heartbeat
  • Sweating
  • Trembling or shaking
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Choking
  • Chest pain
  • Upset stomach

  • Feeling dizzy or lightheaded

  • Sense of unreality or detachment

  • Fear of losing control or going crazy

  • Tingling or numbness sensations

  • Chills or hot flushes

  • Fear of dying

The symptoms of a panic attack are usually the strongest within the first 10 minutes.

Sometimes, when a person has a panic attack in a particular place, such as an elevator or while driving over a bridge, they associate that place with the panic attack, and then avoid that place.
