Causes of Panic Disorder |
| |
No one is really sure about what causes panic disorder, but there are a few reasons why it can happen.
Some people may have a family history of panic disorder, which may increase their chances of having it. Symptoms of panic disorder can also begin or get worse during a difficult period in a person’s life, such as divorce or the death of a loved one.
Often, people with panic disorder have other anxiety disorders or depression. In fact, approximately half of the people with panic disorder will also experience depression at some point in their lives.
Panic disorder is believed to be related to an imbalance of chemicals in the brain. One of these chemicals is called serotonin. Certain medications can restore this balance.
Some of the most commonly used medications for treating panic disorder are known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs. These medicines have been shown to work well and generally cause few side effects. In fact, most patients find SSRIs easy to take.
